I havent owned a gaming system since the original Nintendo (although I have played some games on PC in the past). I just signed up for new internet/cable service and the promotional package they had includes a free Xbox360 to keep. Which I see is now outdated..which is why its probably free. However, Whats the best racing/car game I can get for it? Do you use the hand controller or is there a sweet steering wheel/pedal setup you can get?

Best is likely Forza 4, unless you enjoy a bit of street racing / open world cruising, in which case I'd recommend Forza Horizons.

I'll echo Forzas 4 and Horizon, and advise that you give Burnout: Paradise a go, too.

I'll add another vote for Fourza for serious track racing, Horizon for cruising and more arcade racing and the original Dirt for rally. If you've got a Gamestop nearby pick up used copies for cheap, they are guaranteed to work so you won't have any problems with that.

I've never had problems just using the controller, but wheel and pedal setups exist.

Forza 4 without even blinking (BIG NOTE: DO NOT BY THE "CLASSIC" or "ESSENTIALS" STRIPPED DOWN EDITION BECAUSE IT'S GARBAGE). Even without all the downloadable extra cars, the core game has tons of fun rides, and gigantic amounts of tracks and variants. Really really fun, top 5 best games for the 360.
F1 series. Read up on the series, but probably avoid 2010.
If you play it way too much you can still find fun stuff to do, such as creating a multiclass race of GTs vs Hummers where all the Hummers are AI and drive very aggressively around a small track. It's like a destruction derby circuit race.
The complete Burnout Paradise can probably be had for $15 or $20 and I agree it's fun to tool around in.
Forza Horizon is good if you can buy it CHEAP.
Grid (original, not sequel) is really very excellent. As is Dirt, Dirt2 and Dirt3, with the last probably being my fave and 2 being everyone else's. Still all are very good.
So, the definitive list:
Forza 4
Dirt 2 or Dirt 3 or both
Grid or Burnout Paradise (both "arcade racers," with Grid being actual circuit racing and Burnout being open world mayhem.)
F1 2011 (or 2012, 2013, whatever you can get a deal on or if you care much about real-world rosters)
Forza Horizon
Test Drive Unlimited 2
Avoid: Sega Rally, Midnight Club. Pick carefully among the Need for Speed series: I never waded into those.

I have the Microsoft wheel/pedal combination setup. I love it. The only thing I don't like is it does not have force feedback. Turning the wheel does not have any resistance to simulate hard turning at speed. I spin out a lot with it if I haven't used it in a while. You can get used to it though but I've heard there are better ones.

Fourza is the best, and most realistic racing game you can get for the 360. Great game. If you want a rally game forget DiRT (though the DiRT series is pretty great as well), find a European copy of World Rally Championship 2 on ebay. 13 events, 78 stages, and a career mode that rivals just about any racing game. Sadly never sold in the states, and annoyingly every other game in the series (1, 3, 4) is region blocked to not function on North American XBox consoles. But for some reason WRC 2 works.
All that said, THE game to get for the 360 is, in my opinion, the Mass Effect series. Better character development than most films/TV programs, massive world, great plot, and the freedom to develop your character as you see fit.

Fourza is always the tried and true, but to be honest, I found a lot of enjoyment in, "Need for Speed Shift Unlimited 2" really advanced physics for the time. Also, Dirt 3 is one of the best rally games I've ever played. I used a Fanatec CSR wheel with pedals and H-pattern shifter..incredible setup and amazing feedback during play. Nothing wrong with the classic controller though. Just my opinions...enjoy the free 360! (at least it has a more stable OS than the One)

seems like it would till be better than using the hand remote. But i see what you mean without a "spring" loaded wheel of some sort.

Really looking for the Sim aspect of it i think. Obviously not a big gamer, having not owned a system since Nintendo so i could care less about getting any final fantasy and war games (although im sure they are bad ass). I cant romp around my 700hp car on the streets like i want to. So it would be cool to have a somewhat realistic sim...as close as you can come in your living room anyways. Thats why i was curious about a wheel and pedals. Ill check into the one you listed. thanks for the input! I want to drift naked in my living room i think is what I am getting at.

As others have said, go with Forza first, it's an excellent driving game to start with. And end with. And kind of be in the middle with. You see where I'm going with this. On the Xbox platforms, that's the way to go if you want a decent driving game with a ton of everyday cars that you can go play around with. The driving physics has always felt a bit off to me compared to Gran Turismo, but the customization options in Forza are just nuts. Paint, common engine swaps, wheels, you name it, Forza can most likely do it. You can enable/disable different driving aids until you feel comfortable with the cars and how they handle, and then work your way up in difficulty from there. Seriously, if you want to drive a virtual car with an Xbox, Forza is the way to go, bar none. Best of luck to you :)
